How to stock a bar on a budget

Having a well stocked home bar can seem like a daunting task, especially if your idea of a home bar is that old bottle of liquor in the kitchen cabinet that you just can't seem to finish off. Whether you're hosting a dinner party or a low-key movie night with that special someone, being able to offer a selection outside light or dark beer is a must.

In this short guide we will show you how you can start building your bar, without breaking the bank.

When starting out, go for quality over quantity. A good gentleman's home bar should include the four basic spirits:

  • Whisk(e)y
  • Vodka
  • Gin
  • Brandy

The trick is all about presentation. Go for quality branded or craft spirits, one bottle from each category mentioned above is enough to start. Higher priced bottles of booze will last you longer, as you will be more reluctant to guzzle them – that's what that light beer is for.

Once you have your staples in order, find a place for them to live: the kitchen cabinet might be ideal if you have small children running about, for everyone else consider a well lit shelf or a bar cart.

TIP: If you're unsure what brand liquor to buy, ask your favourite bartender!
